Description

Plug valves are valves with a cylindrical or conical "plug" that can be rotated within the valve body to control the flow through the valve. The plug in a plug valve has one or more hollow passages that pass sideways through the plug so that fluid can flow through the plug when the valve is open.

FAQs about Plug Valves

What are plug valves used for?

Plug valves are an excellent choice for many commercial and light industrial applications, including directional flow control, handling of gases or liquid fuels, regulating fluids containing suspended solids (e.g., slurries), or handling low-pressure, low-temperature service.

Why use a plug valve instead of a ball valve?

Although both valves require regular maintenance to keep them working efficiently, plug valves are easier to maintain than ball valves. The plug can be easily removed for cleaning and repair. There are also fewer moving parts that need attention.

What is the difference between a plug valve and a gate valve?

Closing the valve causes the plug to rotate so the opening is no longer aligned with the port and the body of the plug blocks flow. Gate valves are multi-turn valves, which means that the stem needs to rotate more than 360° to fully open or close. As a result, gate valves close significantly slower than plug valves.

How should a plug valve be installed?

For vertical piping installations, install the valve with the seat facing downstream. Prior to installation, purge the piping to remove all foreign matter. Install the valve with the plug facing upstream. Ensure that the plug is rotated to the fully open position, thus preventing the plug from sweeping over deposited debris.

How do I know if the plug valve is open?

To determine if a valve is open or closed, the general rule is that if the handle is at 90° to the flow, the valve is closed. As you can see from the picture above, if the handle is in line with the flow, it is open.

Are plug valves the same as globe valves?

While both valves control fluid or gas flow, they have different operating mechanisms and functions. Globe valves are primarily used for precise flow control, while plug valves are better suited for on/off control.
